The life-story of the first Guru
The Life of Guru Nanak
ਜਨਮਸਾਖੀ
The traditional Janam-sākhī — the birth, travels and teaching of Guru Nānak, from his childhood at Talwaṇḍī to his udāsīsacross India and beyond, and his final days at Kartārpur. Read here in Max Arthur Macauliffe’s careful English narrative, woven from the old Sikh records, chapter by chapter.
A note on the sources
The Vārān of Bhai Gurdas — the earliest poetic life of the Guru — are not yet included here: no faithful public-domain English translation exists, and we will not ship the Gurmukhi without a trusted meaning. They will be added when a clean public-domain rendering becomes available.
English narrative by Max Arthur Macauliffe, The Sikh Religion: Its Gurus, Sacred Writings and Authors, Vol. 1 (Oxford, 1909), public domain, via Wikisource. Footnotes from the original edition are omitted.
